The Institute for Art & Environment (I-AE) is an independent and interdisciplinary research platform leading creative, hopeful, and innovative projects with environmental, social, and urban themes.

ABOUT

The Institute for Art & Environment (I-AE) is an independent, interdisciplinary research platform working at the intersection of art and science, developing creative and innovative ways of approaching social and environmental issues. The I-AE takes particular interest in how these intersections involve the city, whether as a site or subject of study.

Using arts-based methods and practices, the I-AE builds bridges between the often disconnected arts and sciences with the goal of bringing the arts more meaningfully into socio-environmental discourses. The I-AE aims to inspire hopeful transformations toward more just, equitable, and sustainable cities and communities.

The I-AE creatively and playfully challenges academic research norms by demonstrating that innovative research can happen outside the university and formal institutions in alternative yet meaningful and complementary ways.

The I-AE is founded and led by Emma Arnold (PhD), an interdisciplinary artist, scholar, and writer. Emma has been working on urban and arts-environment projects since 2009 and has led a number of successful projects including the LAX LAB creative laboratory on climate change and the arts of transformation.
